People are going to have opinions, but who has taken on the risk?

Things I Learned Growing Up in a Boat Shop, Part 2…

Growing up at the table with a mom and dad who worked together and ran their business together gives you a different perspective on the world.

I don’t think I’ve ever been an employee for this reason – not that I haven’t had jobs, but I’ve always thought like an owner, looked at the world like an owner.

I see a lot of businesses missing this part. Thinking like employees, waiting for others to make the call, outsourcing leadership of their business, hoping it’ll work itself out, or magically appear/disappear.

That’s not how it works.

When you choose to be an owner you are choosing to take on the risk of the business and, yes, the reward too. You are the one who is shepherding the work in the world, choosing the culture, fulfilling the vision and values in the way you see fit.

It’s work, it’s awesome, it’s rewarding… and it’s also taking on the risk.

So, when you’re making changes, bringing on contractors and/or team members, and listening to other people’s opinions – remember who is on the line. Remember, that the outcome, the risk, and the reward, are ultimately yours.

It’s a great responsibility. It’s not one I take lightly. It’s also a gift to us, as owners and leaders, that we get to craft our thing in the world.  Do it thoughtfully. You’ll never regret caring about the action you take – as long as you keep taking action!
