The Most Common Pitfalls of Delegation

The most common pitfalls of delegation that I see are as follows…

The first most common pitfall of delegation:

The most common mistake I see people make, when they start delegating, is that they start too small. They hand off tasks or to-dos without handing off the big vision that makes those tasks important. Empower people to do great work by giving them the big picture and asking them to show up for their part of the whole. This will eliminate a lot of back and forth, and increase the likelihood that they’ll find creative solutions and improvements along the way. It is also imperative, in the world we’re living in today, where people are asking for and expecting more connection and purpose.

The second:

Another big one is delegating problems simply to get away from them. If there’s a problem that you’re facing, face it. There’s likely an upstream solution that can be thought out. The earlier you’re willing to do this with your team, the more time they’ll be working on solutions that play out better for everyone in the long run. Our problems have a way of sticking around and catching up to us – whether you want them to or not. The sooner you face and move through them, the sooner you (and your team) can move on.

If you’re feeling especially stuck on either of those things, I’d love to help.

Being able to delegate well is imperative for long-term sustainability and success, whether that’s in business or your personal life. You’ll thank yourself, repeatedly, for cultivating this skill.

Make great plans, work with great people, and make sure those two things are connected – so you avoid the most common pitfalls of delegation.
