If you’re in business, you’re a marketer—no way around it.

I often hear folks say, “I hate marketing,” and I get that it can absolutely feel like a chore. HOWEVER, one of the keys to making marketing feel fun, or at least like the US, is to make it generous.

The Problem:

I see two things that really get in the way of people’s ability to market well:

1. A lack of generosity. I’ll call a spade a spade here because I think we need to be really honest about this one. Some coaches think that because they’ve shared their expertise in LinkedIn posts or spoken in coaching groups, they’re owed a return on their efforts. Unfortunately, we’re not owed anything from our audience. That’s transactional thinking, and it sucks the creativity out of you and the generosity you want associated with your business right out of the room.

2. You keep doing things you see other people do, and they aren’t working for you. You keep doing them and get annoyed that things aren’t working. See the problem then?!

The Background:

If you’re in business, it’s your job to be generous.

Generous enough so people see it, feel it, remember it, and one day it comes back around, often in ways you don’t expect but are really fun. 😁

I’m talking about relationship-based business because that is what I do, it’s what I know, and it’s what I see running all big decisions behind the scenes of most businesses, no matter what size they are. Relationships matter. (If you’re questioning this, consider how you found out about that favorite restaurant of yours.)

The Solution:

Give. Give freely, give often. And (don’t miss this part) TAKE NOTES.

  1. Give: Do things, share things, be generous with your wisdom where you can. I’ve had clients host free talks, for example.

  2. Give Freely: host things, share good stuff. You could be known for being connected, generous, and sharing by not just speaking up when your thing is the solution, but sharing other people as the solution as well!

  3. Give Often: Show up with consistency. Don’t be a one-hit wonder! Be social, contribute, connect, and show up. This doesn’t mean every day, but do have some expectations of yourself to show up with some kind of regularity. I have a client who likes to do it every 3rd day, for example.

  4. Take Notes: Watch what works when you do. Do more of what you see working. Look broadly at what got you jobs in the past. How can you turn that into a generous marketing strategy now?

(Secret tip: Not all marketing looks like ‘post, schedule, send’.)

Use the world for inspiration, but not to copy. Don’t even watch your friends or others in your field. Watch other markets entirely and be inspired by what they do (like Veronica and I talk about in this podcast episode HERE.)

Your Take-Away: Do stuff, your way, not like everyone else. Watch what happens, do more of what works.
